PRESS RELEASE DEMONSTRATE AGAINST DEMOLITION OF CHIMNEYS: 26th JUNE
Demonstration to be held at the main gates of Battersea Power Station on Monday 26th June 2006 from 5.00 to 7.00pm
BPSCG has called a demonstration to protest against Parkview's International's proposed demolition of Battersea Power Station's iconic chimneys.
Parkview was given listed building consent to demolish the chimneys last year on the basis of information supplied by them that the chimneys were "beyond repair".
English Heritage and Wandsworth Council did not properly scrutinise the application and it was left to us, together with with Twentieth Century Society and World Monuments Fund to commission civil engineers to look into this issue.
Our engineering team concluded that:
"On the basis of the information available we do not consider that there is no alternative to demolition and rebuilding of the four chimneys."
Despite the expert advice that it is cheaper and quicker to repair the chimneys, Wandsworth Council approved Parkview's application for demolition.
We are calling on everyone who cares about the future of this building to assemble at the main gates in Kirtling Street from 5.00pm onwards on 26th June to voice their protest.
Parkview paid £10 million to take control of the 38 acre site in 1993, which is now worth £700 million. With little or no repairs carried out since 1993, it seems that Parkview's true intention is to demolish the building and sell a cleared site.
